The Assassin’s Creed movie has been anticipated for a while, with Michael Fassbender in the lead role, but the trailer makes it seem so much more real. However, it has a lot to live up to due to fan expectation and with previous failed attempts at video game movies. While disappointing that there is no Altair or Ezio, we should give Ubisoft some credit for coming up with a new and original story.
The movie will be set in the times of the Spanish Inquisition, and one has to wonder whether this was an area missed in games or kept solely for the film, as maybe it could be a bigger ratings driver. This period is interesting because it has similarities to Altair’s time of the Crusades, accept this time it encompasses Catholic Spain trying to get control over the other religions. Religion seems to be an overrunning theme in these games, and even though the beginning of the game states about the writers having no external allegiance, to me it feels like they are all atheists trying to figure religion out.
I have mentioned a well know phrase in my previous articles, which is becoming more relevant in the gaming industry, ‘cash cow’. What Ubisoft don’t want, or need, is for this movie to flop at the box office, and so they will try to make it believable and attractive to fans of the series. Some elements included; an animus, Abstergo, a Lucy like character, a hidden blade and lots of fighting. These are all good additions and make an interesting film, but whether they can keep themes, and ongoing issues, true to the franchise is another matter that will be found out when it premieres.
Other movies have been less successful; Warcraft is due to be released and is not getting the hype from fans, others include Max Payne, Far Cry, Hitman and Resident Evil. The final two I actually enjoyed as action films, rather than video game tie-ins. The problem is that game developers see this as a money machine, but gamers see this as a chance to see their favourite characters on the big screen and in popular mainstream media.
With Michael Fassbender (who is apparently a fan) starring this movie has bags of potential, other actors include; Jeremy Irons, Brendan Gleeson and Marion Cotillard. This cast may not be instantly recognisable but are good names in the business and should make the movie a success.
Overall I am looking forward to the movie but will vent fury if it tarnishes the franchise, something Ubisoft seem to already be doing. However, this movie could lift the whole series and bring in more adoring fans which can’t be a bad thing.
